Slavery Worksheets

Throughout the history of Georgia there have been various racial problems. January eleventh of 2012 there was a worksheet given out to a class of third graders. On the worksheets there were very inappropriate math questions. An example of one of the math problems was "each tree had 56 oranges. If 8 slaves picked them equally, then how much would each slave pick?" This made some of the students parents very uncomfortable and upset Some parents told their children not to even do the assignment. When I heard about this occurrence i was made a little uncomfortable because it was very insensitive to the subject of matter. It was told that the teacher was trying to use the process of cross-curriculum, or incorporating two subjects in one. In my opinion the teacher that created this worksheet could have did better with his examples, because the crossing between history and math, the history portion was not very beneficial. Instead it was very violent and grotesque. In the end I believe the teacher was forced to resign, which i believe was necessary.

  2. Darius, I agree that the teacher overstepped certain boundaries. I think the teacher should be given a second chance. However, resignation from that school was best because it would be hard for the teacher to continue the school year in a hostile climate that was unfortunately created by his/her actions.

    1. I agree with your point of the hostile climate. The parents won't be so quick to forget what had happened, and that could cause some problems.
